Lady Macbeth waits for the arrival of King Duncan in this scene. She clearly shows her determination to embrace the opportunity to seize the crown. Her strength of purpose and power is contrasted with her husband’s tendency to be unsure. Lady Macbeth is the strength behind Macbeth and her ambition will drive her husband forward. She calls on evil spirits to block her ability to feel remorse. The bond between Macbeth and his wife is very strong at the beginning of this scene. However, the first time we see some weakness in their relationship is when Lady Macbeth confronts Macbeth about his manliness. Throughout the play, this weakness grows as the two drift apart which ultimately leads to their downfall.
