Leave all the rest to me
Usually Shakespeare’s scenes end with a rhyming couplet. At the end of this scene, Shakespeare uses a rhyming couplet but then adds a line afterwards which is unusual. Lady Macbeth says “Only look up to clear; / To alter favour ever is to fear: / Leave all the rest to me.” The effect of this last line is very final and powerful. Shakespeare uses the line to show Lady Macbeth’s determination and decisiveness, and the influence she has over her husband. It also highlights his characterization of Lady Macbeth as the one who has the last word.
